New York Primary Voting

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is not perfect, but he has shown the ability to govern. (Cynthia Nixon is simply not ready to govern. Maybe someday, but not until she’s shown some semblance of governing experience.) We should surround Cuomo with progressive reformers who will hold him to the things he promised and that NYers need, particularly by reeling in the rogue Dems who have sided with Republicans to prevent meaningful change to things like corruption reform, criminal justice reform, subways and election reform.

In my opinion, we should re-elect Gov. Cuomo and surround him with these state candidates:

* Lt. Gov: Jumaane Williams. While the lieutenant governor holds an essentially ceremonial position, Mr. Williams has vowed, if elected, to do what he can to add to that pressure. He will be a fresh face in Albany but not a stranger to how government works. (He’s currently a three-term City Councilman.) What’s more, the current lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, has served as little more than an echo for Gov. Andrew Cuomo. During a debate with Mr. Williams, Ms. Hochul could not name a single instance in which she had changed the governor’s mind on an issue, or opposed one of his policies.

* State AG: As I mentioned yesterday, Zephyr Teachout is the best-positioned candidate to clean up the corruption in Albany and to keep in check an out-of-control president. She’s a political corruption expert and I believe she will be an effective champion for democracy and civil rights, good government and the environment, workers’ rights, fair housing and gender equality.

Closer to home, the nomination for Suffolk County Surrogate’s Court Judge will be on the Democratic ballot. But beware: there is only one Democrat: Theresa Whalen. The other candidate, Tara Scully, is a Republican who’s only on the ballot to mislead voters and create a no-contest scenario in November. How did she get there? The Republican Party paid over $35,000 to a firm called Red Elephant, who gathered signatures to put their candidate on the Democratic line. Make no mistake about it: their person, Tara Scully, is no Democrat. That’s a lie. Be sure to vote Whalen and prevent the Republicans from being handed the seat in November.
